WotC Art Musing

Okay, check this out:

This is the current background image of Wizard of the Coast's Daily D&D site (it's from the cover of one of Ed Greenwood's new Forgotten Realms novels:):




Am I the only one who looks at the above image and is reminded of this . . .



. . . combined with the gothic embellishments of this?:

No, you're not. When I saw the first picture I thought, "Hmm, that looks like a sort of Mitteleuropean Gothic version of the Keep on the Borderlands." Then I scrolled down to see what you were going to say about it, and... ah.

Perhaps predictably, I prefer the Otus painting. I like the squared-off, stern solidity of the Keep. It looks like a real Crusader Castle. The people who live there are made of stern stuff. The folk in the castle at the top are a bit fancy-pants if you ask me.
