Note: Removing Some Files From My Dropbox!

EDIT: The files have now been removed.

Back in March, I made around 500MB of fan-created campaign materials available for download via my Dropbox account.

At the time, I said I would leave those files available for a week or so.

And then I promptly forgot about them.

Until now.

I'll be removing the files this weekend. I've had them up for a while, so if there's anything you want to grab, get it before Friday, August 31.

Here's the link:

Big Honking Archive of Free, Fan-created Campaign Material

Of course, if you join Dropbox via this referral link, and then install and set-up the Dropbox program on your computer and/or smartphone or tablet, you can increase my storage space so I don't have to take this offline . . .

Awesome New Tool at DMMuse.com

Go check out the Hex Map & Gazetter Generator at DMMuse.com. With a click of a button you get a hex map and location list of major points of interest!

This makes for an awesome prep tool, or a creative aid to get your campaign creation juices flowing. Here's the output from my first click of the button. Note that I didn't write a lick of what follows between the horizontal rules—it's all generated.

  1. An old battlefield, a major conflict once occurred at this site. The site is haunted by the spirits of the fallen.
  2. A ford provides safe crossing here. A toll of 11cp must be paid to cross.
  3. Erestir is ruled by Lord Ighammo the Broad-backed, who consorts with a Copper Dragon whom the populace adore. Roughly half of the population is devoutly neutral, with the remainder vigorously opposing this philosophy. Predominantly human, dwarves make up only 4% of the population. The city is fearful, due to the turf wars between a large thieves' guild and a well-connected assassins' guild.
  4. A Shrine of The Angel Iath Kol, whose followers pursue dimensional travel. The dense structure houses a single High Priest and 12 guards.
  5. The city of Akroinon boasts a population of 21,000 inhabitants, many of which are of neutral evil alignment. Mostly human, the next most common race is half-orc, at 10% of the population. The ruler of the city is The Vermilion Cabal, a group of 7 of the wealthiest merchants in the city. The citizens are up in arms over the incessant taxation that this group imposes. The setttlement is subject to a strange blight.
  6. Wandering monsters are scouting the area: a Ki-rin.
  7. An abandonned, ancient road house. The terrain around the site poses some challenges. Getting at much of the ruin would require a great deal of excavation and work. The site is a Wild Magic Zone, and spells and magic items will produce randomized, unpredicatable effects, when employed.
  8. The Vicious House is an exclusive way-station that normally caters to soldiers.
  9. A lost canyon here contains deposits of very rare and valuable extra planar metal.
  10. A concentrated point here is teeming with unstable ground. It's origin is a matter of speculation.
  11. A pass provides direct crossing here. A toll of 9sp must be paid to cross.
  12. A lost canyon here contains deposits of very rare and valuable extra planar metal.
  13. A concentrated point here is teeming with unstable ground. It's origin is a matter of speculation.
  14. The town of Shalemiddle supports 4,500 people, 25% of which are dwarves. It is ruled by Lord Itzwillin, a draconian man who seeks to impose his fervent belief in the lawful neutral alignment on whoever dwells in his settlement. The water here is tainted by acid.
  15. The city of Arnacia supports a population of 24,000 inhabitants, a majority of which are of neutral good alignment. Mostly human, the next most common race is hill dwarf, at 8% of the population. The ruler of the city is King Istewart the Just, who reigns from his seat on the Throne of Obsidian. He is criticized for being too altruist in his decisions. The city is known for its busy arena, where gladiators frequently fight against animals and troglodytes.
  16. The following monster(s) defend their lair here: a Green Dragon.
  17. An old battlefield, a violent conflict once occurred at this site. Corpses of lightfeet litter the field.
  18. The city of Polissos supports a population of 19,000 inhabitants, a majority of which are of chaotic neutral alignment. Mostly human, the next most common race is stout, at 8% of the population. The ruler of the city is King Andelbe the Aberrant, who reigns from his seat on the Throne of Bronze. He is criticized for being too chaste in his decisions. The city is known for its violent arena, where gladiators frequently fight against animals and gargoyles.
  19. Deposits of rare Bromellite can be found in the undersea tunnels here.
  20. A shining warning beacon, powered by a burning effigy, under control of the council of the nearest settlement.
  21. A company of 15 naughty loggers is working the area, chopping timber.
  22. An Abbey of Kord. The imposing structure houses 1 clergy and 15 guards.
  23. Wandering monsters are hunting this territory: a Slithering Tracker.
  24. A compact shell keep ruled by a neutral evil usurper named Riano. Protected by an iron-spiked wall, and a contingent of 31 light infantry and 2 balrogs. It is protecting an important natural resource.
  25. A holy pool has been discovered here.
  26. The town of Olding's Ford has a population of about 500 people. They maintain a fine lifestyle through fishing. It is governed by Mayor Godersonn Stougha who is also the regional Duke, and barely tolerated by the people. The town watch has the settlement in an uproar, and have been flagrantly abusing their power.

Pretty impressive, eh? So what are you waiting for—go give it a shot!

I have finally updated all the download links on past posts to point to files in my Dropbox account. I've also updated the downloads page.

If you come across a broken download link, let me know and I'll try to fix it.

RPG Zine Update/Roundup!

A few new zines I've discovered in the past month or so:

&. The names Dungeon and Dragon were taken, so what was left? I'm unsure if this name is pronounced "and" or "ampersand", but either way it's worth checking out.

Frontier Explorer, which focuses on Star Frontiers. Star Frontiers is still my favorite old school space ruleset from back in the day. Yes, even over Traveller.

A Letter from Los Angeles,  a new one-sheet zine from Christian Walker that focuses on "a pair of friends who served together in Viet Nam and have remained close. They cruise around in a pimped out 1977 Dodge van, breaking hearts and slaying monsters."

The Planewalker's Codex. I never understood Planescape, but evidently a lot of people do. And they've churned out a really cool zine, too.

PocketTroll, a new microzine for Tunnels & Trolls.

Psychedelic Fantasies, a new zine/module thingy from Geoffrey McKinney, the mad genius behind the Carcosa supplement originally for OD&D and later revised for LotFP.

Rogue Transmission, with a focus on the new indie space RPG Rogue Space. This is a rules-light game that is definitely worth checking out.

All of these have been added to the zine page.

What is this GenCon whereof you speak?

I'm not at GenCon.

In fact, I've never been to GenCon.

I'd like to go, but alas, our budget does not allow it.

So, I am going to resort to some begging.

Mr. Snookums requests that you pick up some extra OSR-related swag and mail it to me for him. Pretty please?

Would one of these change the dynamic of your campaign?

The Final Tally: OSR OGL BLOGOSPHERE MONSTERS PROJECT

After closing the file yesterday around 6:30 pm CST, I did a final tally and we have 54 creatures in the project compendium!

Excellent!

Over the next couple of weeks or so, I'll work on organizing these in alphabetical order, cleaning up typos, normalizing fonts, etc. and making a useable PDF for download.

Until then, you can still view and download the raw file that everyone contributed to here: OSR OGL BLOGOSPHERE MONSTERS PROJECT.

I'm no layout wizard (I use Pages on the Mac for most of the PDFS I turn out), so don't expect something as fantastic looking as Secret Santicore. It'll be more on the level of the Hamsterish Hoard of Monsters or the Mikeez Wurld Hackmaster Monster files hosted on the download page: readable & workable.

I just realized I need to move that Hackmaster file to my Dropbox account--I'll change the link when that gets done. I'm on a library computer now and can't remember my Dropbox password!. Done!

And don't forget about Community Project #2: The Young Green Dragon Over the Next Hill! Garth needs some love, folks. We've only keyed about 1/3 of the encounter.
