Tips for the Dungeon Master / Game Master

Over on the forums started a good thread that I liked. So I pulled it together as a PDF and posted it here for your enjoyment.  I'm planning on eventually expanding this, incorporating material from the old NetBooks/SplatBooks. Maybe. Maybe not.

DM/GM Guide.pdf

Yes, there are already a few great guides on DMing, some OSR specific, some not:

  1. Matthew Finch's Quick Primer for Old School Gaming (free PDF via
  2. R.E.B. Tongue's Getting Started (PDF served from my ftp space)
  3. Chapters 3 and 4 of Stuart Marshall's OSRIC ruleset (free PDF)
  4. Jason "Flynn" Kemp's MyD20 Lite Referee's Guide (free PDF)
  5. Richard Staat's GM Principles (zipped PDF file)
  6. Joseph DuBois' Guide to Better DMing (zipped ascii text file)
  7. Jørn Losnegård & Ole A. Ringdal's Some Notes on DM-ing Adventures v1.0 (zipped ascii text file)

Does the world need another one?  Probably not.  But hey, I just liked the stuff the Dragonsfoot posters put together.  So there you are.

Wow, great list. I'll have to study these in the upcoming days (and weeks?)…

There's also the 330 page Gamemastering by Brian Jamison

Wow! Thanks for that one. I'd never heard of it before. Looks like I might have to buy the actual book!
